In microdosing communities, a protocol usually means a repeating pattern of dosing days and off-days. These protocols are useful but also can sound formal and demanding. Don’t think of them as validated clinical treatment standards—research has not established one schedule as best—but rather as loose guidelines that you can experiment with to see what works best.
Protocols and off-days
One of the first questions people ask after having a positive experience is, “Why shouldn’t I just take a microdose every day?” It’s a reasonable question.
The primary reason has to do with tolerance.
Like other classic psychedelics, psilocybin produces tolerance when taken repeatedly over consecutive days. In simple terms, the effects tend to become less noticeable over time. Taking regular days off gives your system an opportunity to reset before your next dose. Exactly how quickly that tolerance develops—or how much it matters at microdose levels—is still something researchers are trying to understand, but the practice of taking days off has become one of the most widely adopted aspects of microdosing.
That doesn’t mean there’s one protocol that’s right for everyone. Some people prefer alternating dose days and off days. Others follow schedules with longer breaks. Rather than worrying about finding the perfect protocol, I encourage people to begin with one of the more common approaches, pay close attention to how they feel, and adjust thoughtfully over time.
Off days serve another purpose as well. They give you something to compare against.
If you’re journaling consistently, you may begin to notice that certain emotions, thought patterns, or physical sensations feel different on dosing days than they do on days without a microdose. Sometimes you’ll discover that a difficult emotion which felt overwhelming a few weeks ago now feels a little easier to sit with. Other times you may realize the changes you’re noticing have less to do with the microdose itself and more to do with the meditation, journaling, time in nature, or other practices you’ve been cultivating alongside it.
That’s one of the reasons I encourage people to keep both dosing days and non-dosing days. Together, they create a more complete picture of what’s changing over time.

The Fadiman protocol
One day on, two consecutive days off.
One of the oldest and best-known microdosing schedules is the Fadiman protocol: one day of dosing followed by two days off before dosing again.
One reason I like this protocol, especially for people who are just getting started, is that it naturally encourages observation. Rather than taking a dose every day, you have an opportunity to notice how you feel on the day you microdose, the day after, and again on the second off-day before your next dose. If you’re journaling consistently, those three days often begin to tell a story that would be much harder to recognize if you were dosing every day.
The days off also help reduce the possibility of building tolerance, which is one of the primary reasons protocols exist in the first place. While researchers still don’t fully understand how quickly tolerance develops at microdose levels, taking regular breaks has become common practice among both researchers and experienced practitioners.
That doesn’t mean the Fadiman protocol is the “best” protocol. Think of it less as a prescription and more as a thoughtful place to begin. As you gain experience and continue paying attention to your own observations, you may discover that a different rhythm fits your life and your goals more naturally.
The Stamets Stack protocol
Four consecutive days on, three consecutive days off.
Another well-known approach is the Stamets Stack, developed by mycologist Paul Stamets. It combines psilocybin mushrooms with Lion’s Mane mushroom and niacin (vitamin B3) for several consecutive dosing days followed by days off.
The idea behind the stack is that each component may contribute something different. Psilocybin is thought to encourage new patterns of awareness, Lion’s Mane has attracted attention for its potential effects on nerve growth and cognitive health, and niacin has been proposed as a way of increasing blood flow, with the suggestion that it may help distribute these compounds throughout the body.
It’s an interesting hypothesis but at the moment remains just that—a hypothesis.
While Lion’s Mane has shown encouraging results in preclinical research and a handful of early human studies, we don’t yet have controlled clinical trials demonstrating that combining it with psilocybin produces better outcomes than psilocybin alone. Likewise, the idea that niacin enhances the effects of the stack hasn’t been established in human research.
It’s also worth remembering that niacin isn’t an inert supplement. At nutritional doses it’s an essential vitamin, but larger supplemental doses commonly produce flushing, warmth, itching, and other side effects. Those sensations can be uncomfortable, and they shouldn’t be interpreted as evidence that the stack is somehow “reaching the nerves” or working more effectively.
Like many aspects of microdosing, I think it’s helpful to separate interesting ideas from established evidence. The Stamets Stack may eventually prove to have unique advantages, or it may not. At this point, we simply don’t know.
For that reason, I generally encourage people who are new to microdosing to begin simply. If you eventually decide you’d like to experiment with additional supplements, you’ll have a much clearer sense of what each change is actually contributing because you’ll already understand how your own mind and body respond to psilocybin by itself.
The every-other-day pattern
Alternating dosing and off-days is easy to remember and creates regular comparison days. Ease of use does not establish an optimal exposure frequency. The pattern may also make a practice feel routine before long-term benefit and safety are understood.
Intuitive dosing
As people become more familiar with microdosing, many naturally drift away from rigid protocols and begin dosing more intuitively. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. In fact, I think learning to trust your own experience is one of the long-term goals of the practice.
The challenge is that intuition and impulse can sometimes look very similar.
If we’re under a great deal of stress, feeling emotionally overwhelmed, or simply remember that yesterday’s dose felt particularly helpful, it’s easy to convince ourselves that today must be another dosing day. Over time, that can slowly become less of a thoughtful practice and more of an automatic habit.
One of the reasons I encourage people to begin with a simple protocol is that it gives you something to compare against. It creates enough structure to notice how you’re feeling on dosing days, on the days that follow, and after several days without a dose. That rhythm makes it much easier to recognize patterns that would otherwise be easy to miss. Research hasn’t shown one protocol to be superior to another, but protocols provide a useful framework for observation rather than simply relying on memory or instinct.
As you gain experience, your relationship with the practice may naturally evolve. If you eventually find yourself dosing more intuitively, I’d encourage you to keep one habit from your earlier practice: continue journaling. A written record has a remarkable way of revealing patterns that are difficult to see while we’re living them.
To me, intuitive dosing isn’t about abandoning structure. It’s about gradually replacing external structure with genuine self-awareness. The more honestly you can observe yourself, the more your intuition has something real to stand on.
There is no evidence-based “best protocol”
A protocol name can offer order, belonging, or a story about why a schedule should work. None of those establishes superiority. The most accurate reader-facing conclusion is that these are commonly discussed patterns with insufficient comparative evidence.
